&lt;li&gt;With config.ru, Phusion Passenger will detect your app as a Rack app. This means smart spawning is not supported, you&#039;ll have to do with conservative spawning.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;By deleting config.ru, Phusion Passenger will detect your app as a Rails app, and smart spawning is supported in this case.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Phusion Passenger 3 will support smart spawning for Rack apps too, so with Phusion Passenger 3 you don&#039;t have to delete config.ru to take advantage of smart spawning.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;With Phusion Passenger 3, whether you delete config.ru or not, Rails 3 will work.&lt;/li&gt;
